Egg Loop Knot

The egg loop knot is commonly used for salmon and steelhead fishing to secure bait like skein or beads while keeping it tight to the hook shank.

How to Tie the Egg Loop Knot

  1. Pass the tag end of the line through the eye of the hook, leaving a long tag end.
  2. Lay the tag end along the shank of the hook and begin wrapping the line around the hook shank and tag end.
  3. Continue wrapping tightly down the shank (8-10 wraps), keeping the coils neat and evenly spaced.
  4. Bring the tag end back toward the hook eye and pass it through the loop near the eye.
  5. Pull the standing line slowly while holding the wraps in place so they tighten evenly along the shank.
  6. Adjust the loop size (this loop is what will hold your bait).
  7. Finish tightening the knot securely and trim any excess tag end if needed.

Pro Tips

  • Keep wraps tight and evenly spaced for best strength.
  • Works great for holding salmon eggs or soft bait in place.
  • Do not let wraps overlap or the knot can slip.
  • Wet the line before tightening to reduce friction.
  • Adjust loop size based on bait size.
