Improved Clinch Knot

The improved clinch knot is a strong, reliable terminal knot for monofilament and fluorocarbon lines. It is commonly used to secure hooks, swivels, and lures in a wide range of freshwater setups.

How to Tie the Improved Clinch Knot

  1. Pass the tag end of the line through the eye of the hook and pull through 5-7 inches of line.
  2. Wrap the tag end around the standing line 5 to 7 times, working away from the hook.
  3. Pass the tag end through the small loop near the eye of the hook. Ensure this loop is clearly visible before inserting the line.
  4. Then pass the tag end back through the larger loop that was just formed. This is what makes it an "improved" clinch knot.
  5. Moisten the knot and slowly pull the standing line while holding the tag end to tighten. The wraps should cinch neatly against the hook eye.
  6. Trim the tag end, leaving a small amount to prevent slipping.

Pro Tips

  • Works best with monofilament and fluorocarbon.
  • Not ideal for braid (can slip).
  • Always moisten before tightening to reduce friction.
  • If wraps overlap or look messy, retie the knot.
